Day 1 Rome - Civitavecchia
At the airport of Rome, meet your tour escort who will stay with you throughout the entire stay in Italy. From the airport, reach Tarquinia first and then Cerveteri: you will visit the necropolis dating back to the Etruscan times. Drive back to Civitavecchia where you will board the ferry leaving at 7pm that will take you during the night to Palermo in Sicily. Night onboard.
Day 2 Monreale - Segesta
Once in Palermo at 9am, you will travel southwards to Monreale where you visit with a guide the cathedral that is one of the greatest extant examples of Norman architecture anywhere. It was begun in 1174 by William II. It is, however, the large extent (6,500 m2) of the impressive glass mosaics covering the interior which make this church so splendid. With the exception of a high dado, made of marble slabs with bands of mosaic between them, the whole interior surface of the walls, including soffitsand jambs of all the arches, is covered with minute mosaic-pictures in bright colors on a gold ground. In the afteroon, you will continue the transfer stopping and visiting the first of the two archaeological park you will find in Sicily: Segesta. Your hotel for tonight will be near Selinunte.
Day 3 Selinunte Temples’ Valley - Agrigento
In the morning, you will visit the second archaeological park in Sicily and the biggest in Europe: Selinunte. In the afternoon, after 90-minute drive, you will reach Agrigento where you will visit the Temples’ Valley (one of the most outstanding examples of Greater Greece art and architecture). You will spend the night in Agrigento.
Day 4 Piazza Armerina – Necropolis of Pantalica - Syracuse
Leave Agrigento directed to Piazza Armerina where you will visit the Villa Romana del Casale. Excavations have revealed one of the richest, largest, and varied collections of Roman mosaics in the world for which the site has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The villa and its artworks date to the early 4th century AD. In the afternoon, on your way to Syracuse, stop and visit the Necropolis of Pantalica, a collection of cemeteries with rock-cut chamber tombs dating from the 7th to the 13th centuries BC. Together with the city of Syracuse, Pantalica was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. Continue to Syracuse and check-in
Day 5 Syracuse - Taormina
This morning, you will visit Syracuse, The city is notable for its rich Greek history, culture, amphitheatres, architecture, and as the birthplace of the preeminent mathematician and engineer Archimedes. This 2,700-year-old city played a key role in ancient times, when it was one of the major powers of the Mediterranean world. Continue to Taormina and check-in.
Day 6 Taormina - Catania
In the morning, you will visit the famous Ancient Greek Theatre of Taormina. In the afternoon, you will continue to Catania and after a visit of the town you will board the night ferry directed to Salerno. Night onboard
Day 7 Pompeii
Once in Salerno you will reach Pompeii where you will visit the excavations. Check-in in Sorrento where you will spend two nights
Day 8 Herculaneum – Vesuvius
This morning, you will visit Herculaneum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is famous as one of the few ancient cities that can now be seen in much of its original splendour, as well as for having been lost, along with Pompeii, Stabiae, Oplontis and Boscoreale, in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 that buried it. Unlike Pompeii, the deep pyroclastic material which covered it preserved wooden and other organic-based objects such as roofs, beds, doors, food and even some 300 skeletons which were discovered in recent years along the seashore. It had been thought until then that the town had been evacuated by the inhabitants. In the afternoon, accompanied by an alpine guide, you will climb the Mount Vesuvius, the volcano responsible of the destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum
Day 9 Naples – Rome
Leave Sorrento to reach Naples where you will visit Naples Underground. In the afternoon, after a good slice of pizza, continue to Rome where you will spend 2 nights.
Day 10 Rome
To end this tour dedicated to the antique civilizations, you will visit Rome following the Imperial theme. You will visit also the Colosseum. Afternoon on your own to get ready for the departure
